What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Ozempic and Wegovy are the same active ingredient, semaglutide, made by the same company, Novo Nordisk. The difference is the FDA-approved use and the maximum dose. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, with a typical maximum of 2.0 mg weekly. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a related condition, and titrates up to 2.4 mg weekly. Pricing, insurance coverage, and pen-strength choices follow from those two label differences. The molecule, the mechanism, the side effects, and the safety profile are otherwise the same. Talk to your doctor about which option fits your indication, BMI, and insurance.
