Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same drug?
Yes, in the most important sense. Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Novo Nordisk. Same active ingredient, same mechanism in the body, same weekly subcutaneous injection. The difference is the label printed on the box. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and tops out at 2.0 mg weekly. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management and tops out at 2.4 mg weekly. From there, almost everything else, including the boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors, the contraindications, the common side effects, and the pen storage, is identical. Pricing and insurance behavior differ because the indications differ. Talk to your doctor about which fits your situation.
