DEXA vs Bod Pod vs bioimpedance, what's the difference?
DEXA is the clinical reference. It uses two low-dose X-ray beams to measure fat, lean, and bone, with a regional breakdown. Most accurate, around 100 to 200 dollars per scan in the US, only available at imaging centers and some gyms. Bod Pod uses air displacement to estimate fat and lean from body density. Accuracy on body composition is close to DEXA, around 50 to 100 dollars, but it gives no bone density and no regional split. Bioimpedance (BIA), the method behind smart scales and InBody machines, is fast, cheap, and great for trend lines, but the absolute numbers shift with hydration and time of day. A useful combination on a GLP-1 is DEXA twice a year as the reference and a smart scale or InBody for weekly trend.
