Does GLP-1 medication weaken your bones?
Rapid weight loss in any form, including bariatric surgery and dietary weight loss, is associated with bone density decline, and GLP-1 medications cause rapid weight loss. The direct effect of semaglutide or tirzepatide on bone is still being studied, but the underlying biology applies: less mechanical loading on the skeleton, lower calcium and vitamin D intake during low-appetite stretches, and changes in bone remodeling can shift T-scores over months. The risk tends to be higher in postmenopausal women, older adults, anyone with a history of low bone density, and people in aggressive deficits. Resistance training, adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, and a moderate deficit support bone health. A baseline DEXA and a follow-up at 6 to 12 months can catch a real drift early. Discuss your own risk with your doctor.
