How much is a DEXA scan and where do I get one?
A full-body DEXA scan in the US typically runs 100 to 200 dollars out of pocket. Specialized fitness centers, BodySpec, DexaFit, and many imaging clinics offer them, often without a doctor referral. Hospitals charge more, sometimes 250 to 400 dollars. When you book, ask specifically for a body composition DEXA, not a bone-density-only DEXA, because insurance-covered scans are usually limited to bone density and skip fat and lean breakdowns. If you have osteopenia, osteoporosis risk factors, or are postmenopausal, your insurance may cover the bone density portion through your doctor. Outside the US, prices and availability vary; UK private scans run around 80 to 150 pounds, and most European clinics are in a similar range.
